Mano Negra Illegal is a compilation that pays homage to Mano Negra through twenty covers by groups claiming to be influenced by it.
The cover depicts a wooden crate with black handprints (in Spanish Mano Negra means "black hand" and refers to the Spanish anarchist movement), as if for an "illegal" cargo. The title of the compilation is an allusion to the song Clandestino by Manu Chao which included the words “Mano Negra illegal”.
