BIOGRAPHY
Bette & Wallet is Mary Beth Carty from Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, and Gabriel F. Ouellette from Portneuf County, Quebec. They make recycled music, an art form designed to combat cultural imperialism, one song response at a time. Juxtaposing contemporary lyrics with old melodies, Bette & Wallet sing about squeegees, the perils of urban life, the cult of the automobile, civil servant's week, etc. They mix the sounds of their respective homelands with klezmer, Irish, Cajun, and progressive rock influences, to create a danceable cultural quilt. Alber Weber of Déferlantes Le Mag, recently described their music as “a gust of wind or a cool wave that wets you without warning. Stimulating and friendly.” Bette & Wallet's debut album, Voici..., recorded at home and released independently, earned them invitations to numerous festivals and nominations for several awards.
Always pushing the boundaries of the genre, their second opus: Electric.
